2. The toolbar

← Project overview

The toolbar sits along the top and stays in place when you scroll. Everything you set here shapes both halves of the screen at once.

From left to right:

  • Timeline level: whether the timeline runs in months, quarters or years. This is what zooms the view.

  • Users: narrow the list to a single team.

  • Filter: show only the projects you need, by type, status, customer type, or one of your own saved filters.

  • Sort: the order of the project list, and whether it runs forwards or backwards.

  • Period: which months the timeline covers. The arrows either side jump a whole period at a time.

  • Settings, on the far right: which columns the list shows, for projects, milestones and tasks separately.

Timeline level

There are three levels, and each draws a day at a different width:

  • Month shows the month, the year and every individual date. Dragging is most precise here, so this is where you do detailed replanning.

  • Quarters shows the year and its quarters, for planning across a year.

  • Years shows years and quarters, for the long strategic view.

Month is the level you start on.

Changing level re-rounds your period so the view always shows whole units. Month view snaps to the first and last day of the month. Quarters view snaps to whole quarters and always shows at least four. Years view snaps to whole years and always shows at least four years.

This means the view can widen the period you asked for. Pick a single month, switch to Years, and you see four full years starting from the year you picked. Your start date is the anchor; the minimum span for the level decides the rest.

Period

The period selector works in whole months. You choose a start month and an end month rather than particular days.

Opening the view for the first time puts you in the current period, running one month ahead in month view, a year in quarters view and three years in years view, each widened to the minimum for that level.

The timeline keeps a fixed width. On a narrow screen you scroll sideways. On a wide screen the timeline stays as it is and the spare room is left empty rather than stretching your bars.

Users

Pick a single team, or All teams. Only the teams you have access to are offered. Selecting individual people is not possible, since the filter works at team level.

Filter

The Filter button opens a panel with a tab for each kind of filter. A red dot on the button shows that filters are active, and Clear empties them.

  • Your own filters: the saved filters you have built on your projects. This tab appears where your projects come from the project register.

  • Project type, or Work areas if you work with project tasks.

  • Project status, or task states if you work with project tasks.

  • Customer type.

You can combine several filters, and pick several values inside one filter. The list and the timeline update as you go. If nothing matches you get a message rather than an empty screen.

Your own filters are personal. Shared and public filters are not offered here.

Sort

Three orders are available: alphabetically, by project start date, and by project creation date. The arrow next to the list flips between ascending and descending.

Settings, choosing your columns

The cog on the far right opens the column settings. Projects, milestones and tasks each get their own cog, so the three levels can show different things.

Each level can show up to five columns. Once five are ticked, the rest are blocked until you untick one. Drag the ticked columns to change their order, then Apply. Reset puts the level back to its defaults, and Cancel leaves everything as it was.

By default, all three levels show Title, Start date, Deadline and Total days.

Your column choices are personal, like the rest of the toolbar.

The dialog is titled Hierarchy and column display, but only the column part is active in this version. You cannot switch the milestone or task levels off.
